About the Competition

This Architecture competition invites architects and designers, both professional and students, to create a contemporary, vibrant and sustainable urban place for meeting, working and socialising by creating a building pavilion to be called Q-Air Point.

The aim of the competition is to encourage existing and future architects and designers from around the globe to design more real-world sustainable buildings that are both visually and thermally comfortable, and above all, energy efficient with high aesthetics.

Q-Air Point can be located in any urban place worldwide, but must use the innovative Q-Air glass façade system, which provides multiple benefits. It also needs to be designed in the advanced BIM environment. The Q-Air Point encourages creativity, functionality, aesthetics and connects people with the best architectural and design solutions for highest well-being.

The winning submissions will be presented at the BIM WORLD conference being held in Munich in November 2018.


Q-Air Point

The aim of the competition is to design a multi-application pavilion where people can work, meet friends or business partners, or just simply chill. The task is therefore to create one room which is approximately 200sqm in size. The space can be divided into two smaller rooms for added comfort, with a small coffee area, but for larger events, include a kitchen area of at least 50sqm as well as provision for restrooms. An outside area can also be included within the scope of the design, but if included, should be appropriate to the site you have chosen to locate your Pavilion.

Room programme for Q-Air Point:

  • Working / meeting / socialising 200sqm
  • Café / restaurant / catering 50sqm
  • Restrooms 15sqm
  • Outside area depends on site

The choice of location for your Q-Air Point is entirely up to you, but must be in an urban place.

The winning submissions will be presented at the BIM WORLD conference being held in Munich in November 2018.

Evaluation criteria

The best solutions will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Innovative, aesthetic and functional design, with the emphasis on beneficial, sustainable architecture (e.g. living and working comfort, energy efficiency and use of natural daylight)
  • Understanding the new concept of (highly) glazed buildings using the innovative glass façade solution Q-Air
  • Q-Air 5* glass façade system needs to be used in the design and should have the majority share of materials used (approx. 60% or more) of the complete façade;
  • Show a variety of architectural and design possibilities using different Q-Air elements (units);
  • BIM design and use of Q-Air BIM library
  • Suitability for the its urban placement – universal use of the pavilion in the urbanized locations worldwide

*Q-Air 5 is 5 chamber glazing system (6-layers of glass), incorporating either polyamide profiles or aluminium profiles.

The Q-Air Point Architecture competition offers no monetary reward as the competition is designed for the greater purpose – the accumulation of knowledge, valuable experience and recognition.

Announcement, exhibition and presentation at BIM World MUNICH

Submissions from Q-Air Point finalists will be exhibited at the international conference BIM World Munich from 27 to 28. November 2018 at Trimo´s exhibition space. From the finalists the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners will be announced. The winners will have the opportunity to present their Q-Air Point submitted proposals to visitors. More information regarding the announcement and presentation time will follow after the finalists are selected and will be communicated directly.

Visiting the conference

1st, 2nd and 3rd winners will each receive two free tickets to attend the two-day programme of BIM World MUNICH conference (Conference + Exhibition). Winners will also attend the evening event on the 27th November 2018 in Munich, organised by Organiser of the competition.

The best competition entries will be published on The winning architectural proposals will be presented/announced/shared also on the web sites and/or social media channels of partners Trimo, Kohlbecker, Cantori and Skandinaviska (consortium partners of Q-Air H2020 project) and delivered as creative winning results to the European Commission within the Q-Air H2020 project reporting.

The Q-Air Point Architecture competition is prepared and organised by Trimo and Kohlbecker within the Q-Air H2020 innovation project. Partners Cantori and ZAG are participating in the competition acting as jury members.


The Architecture competition is part of the Q-Air European innovation project: Sustainable Prefabricated Glass Façade with Performance Exceeding State-of-the-art Glass Façades (acronym Q-Air) within the Horizon 2020 programme, being implemented by five international consortium partners Trimo, Architectural solutions, d.o.o. from Slovenia, Kohlbecker Gesamtplan GmbH from Germany, ZAG, Slovenian national building and civil engineering institute from Slovenia, Cantori s.r.l. from Italy and Skandinaviska Glassystem AB from Sweden.

The Kohlbecker architecture office was founded in 1930 by Karl Kohlbecker. Our expertise lies in construction-related consulting and planning from one source for both domestic and international projects.
